Stripping and developing compositions
This guideline deals with compositions used to remove a polymeric layer from a substrate by dissolution, for example paint strippers and developing agents for photoresists.
In Manual coding, these compositions have always been coded as A8-S2 Solvents. When important, the process of dissolution may be coded as A11-C Other miscellaneous processes.
In Enhanced coding it is not necessary to index the components of the stripping composition as additives at all. In reality the composition formed by dissolution of the polymer is not of any great use or significance, therefore there is no point in indexing it as an S1605 Solution, or in indexing the presence of an A475 Solvent. Instead you should index the process of dissolution, using the code N5889 Dissolving general.
Occasionally you will come across stripping/developing compositions which contain polymeric components.
In Manual coding, a polymer used in any context to produce a printing plate by patterned exposure is coded under A12-L2B1 (Photographic compositions used to produce printing plates), along with the appropriate code for the type of printing plate being made. This includes polymeric components of developing compositions. In the same way, for a polymer used in any way to make an electrical/electro-optical device, you should use A12-L2B2 (Photographic compositions used to produce electrical devices), and the appropriate code(s) for the device being made.
Polymers used in developing compositions used for resists of other or unspecified use are coded as A12-L2F Photographic compositions containing non-radiation sensitive polymers.
Polymers in other types of stripping compositions are coded as A12-W12 Miscellaneous compositions, or if they act as surfactants in the composition, as A12-W12C Surfactant (Application).
In Enhanced coding, the polymeric components of developers
for photoresists are coded as Q8708 Other photography. Q9110 Surfactant (Application)
and/or Q9347 Viscosity modifier (Application) are coded in addition, where appropriate.
These two codes may also used for polymers in other types of stripping compositions,
but where neither is appropriate you should code Q9369 Other polymer use instead.
