Country Notes: Former Soviet state. The patent office for the Russian Federation opened when the patent office for the USSR (SU) closed 01/02/1992. The PCT membership list issued by WIPO gives 29/03/1978 as the date on which the Russian Federation became party to the PCT. This is the date of ratification of the USSR, continued by the Russian Federation as of 25/12/1991 (the date the USSR ceased to exist). On 17/02/1994 the Russian Federation adopted an agreement along with 10 other member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, establishing the Eurasian Patent Convention.

07/04/2004 UPDATE: Changes to the Russian Patent Law came into effect in 2003. These include: (1) an extension of the patent term by up to 5 years for patents relating to drugs, pesticides or agrochemicals and (2) the exclusion of the grant of patents for computer programs.
