Country Notes: Tanzania united Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar. The patent laws for both regions are derived separately. Registrations must be entered separately and maintained by the two regions. 

On 03/08/1999 the United Republic of Tanzania became bound by the Harare Protocol within the framework of ARIPO as well as becoming the 103rd contracting state when it acceded to the PCT on 14/09/1999. This means that as from 14/09/1999 it is possible for applicants to designate, under PCT, the United Republic of Tanzania, for an ARIPO patent as well as for a national patent.

28/02/2004 UPDATE: Article 22(1) of the PCT was amended on 04/10/2001. The amendments took effect on 01/04/2002 from which date the time limit for entry into the national/regional phase will be globally extended from 20 to 30 months. The Intellectual Property Office of United Republic of Tanzania is not applying the new time limit.
