Current awareness searching in Derwent World Patents Index - Setting up an SDI: Dialog

Setting up an SDI: Dialog (files 351; 352; 350)
When you set up an SDI on Dialog the results will automatically be delivered to your normal postal address unless you specify otherwise. If want the results delivered in a different way you must create an alternative delivery option first. The command EDIT ADDRESS is used to create an additional postal address. In this example we will specify e-mail delivery which is set up using the EDIT ADDRESS EMAIL command. We could also have used the EDIT ADDRESS FAX command to specify fax delivery.

? edit address email

Please choose an Electronic Mail Delivery Option:

1. Internet
2. MCI Mail(R)
3. X.400
4. Lotus Notes

Q = Quit   H = Help
? 1
Internet address sample format: name@domain.type

Enter address information for E-Mail (Internet) delivery

Q = Quit     H = Help

Internet address
? ian.pearce@derwent.co.uk
 1. Internet address IAN.PEARCE@DERWENT.CO.UK

This address will be used for E-Mail (Internet) delivery:

Internet address IAN.PEARCE@DERWENT.CO.UK

S = Save address   C = Change address   Q = Quit   H = Help
To name the address, enter S plus up to 6 characters (e.g., S JSMITH).
Enter a command.
? s ian
Address is saved as "ADIAN".

We have now created an e-mail delivery option to the address ian.pearce@derwent.co.uk that is saved under the name ADIAN.

You can also tell Dialog that you do not wish to be notified if no new record matches your SDI search strategy using the SET NOTIFY OFF command (ON is the default setting).

The next stage in creating your SDI involves running the search query within Derwent WPI. An example search is given below:

? s ic=(C11D-013/00 OR C11D-009/50 OR A61K-007/50)
             341 IC=C11D-013/00
             285 IC=C11D-009/50
            5016 IC=A61K-007/50
      S1 5570 IC=(C11D-013/00 OR C11D-009/50 OR A61K-007/50)
? s ub=9999
      S2 11717 UB=9999
? s s1 and s2
            5570 S3
           11717 S4
      S3 7 S3 AND S4

By combining the initial IPC search with "UB=9999" we have restricted the results to records in the latest update relating to new inventions only (e.g. basics). If you omit this step then DIALOG will assume the default update code of "UD=" which is assigned to any record in Derwent WPI that is either added to the file or modified in any way in the latest update.

The following additional update codes are also available for your use:

UE=

UC=
UM=
UP=
assigned to records to which an equivalent family member has been added (if a basic and equivalent are added to a record in the same update then the record is assigned both UB and UE update codes)
assigned to records which have been corrected in any way
assigned to records to which chemical indexing has been added
assigned to records to which polymer indexing has been added

If you wish you can now give your search a title which will appear on the subject line of the email, the cover page of the fax or on each page of the postal prints when the results are delivered to you. This is achieved through the PRINT TITLE command e.g.

? print title testing SDI feature

In this example we have called the search "testing SDI feature".

After running the search you should create a PRINT command to specify the set number, format and range of records to be delivered each time the SDI is run. In this example we are asking for all records from S3 to be sent in format 9. By including the "ADDRESS ADIAN" we are requesting the results to be delivered to the e-mail address entered previously.

? print s3/9/all addr adian

After entering Y to confirm the alternate address Dialog will display the estimated cots of the records. As we are starting an SDI we should enter N at the prompt here so that a print request is not executed at this point.

We now need to save the search as an SDI using the command SAVE ALERT followed by a name for the search and the frequency that we wish the SDI to be run. For example if we are calling our search "test"

for the SDI to be run every time Derwent WPI is updated:

? save alert test

(every update is the default and so does not need to be expressly specified)

for the SDI to be run every calendar month:

? save alert test monthly

The SDI will now run until it is deleted. To see a list of the SDIs saved at any one time the command is RECALL ALERT. To review a specific SDI enter RECALL "name".

To delete an SDI enter RELEASE "name". An alternative route to creating an SDI to the one described above if you are not using a PRINT TITLE command is to enter the PRINT command after entering SAVE ALERT.
