The UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium Chooses Web Of Science By Thomson Reuters To Meet Education And Research Needs Of 50 Universities In India

Delhi, INDIA — Aug 4, 2010 — The UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium, funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India, has selected Web of Science from Thomson Reuters to meet the education and research needs of its members. Fifty universities in India that are represented by the UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium will benefit from this access including the University of Delhi, University of Hyderabad, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Bangalore University.

The agreement is part of the project entitled N-List, a joint project of INDEST AICTE Consortium (Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences & Technology) and UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium.  The latter provides its member institutions with current and archival access as well as differential access to subscribed e-resources. The programme is implemented by the INFLIBNET Information and Library Network) Centre, Ahmedabad, which is involved in creating infrastructure for the sharing of library and information resources and services among academic and research institutions.

Students, researchers and faculty members across India will now benefit from easy access to Web of Science, the world's leading citation database with multidisciplinary coverage of over 11,000 influential journals and 110,000 conference proceedings spanning the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. They will also benefit from Web of Science backfiles which provide comprehensive, worldwide coverage in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities with fully indexed, searchable and linkable data to help them conduct deeper, more complete research.

Said Dr. Jagdish Arora, Director of INFLIBNET Centre, “By subscribing to the Web of Science, we are providing our universities with access to world-class research information at their fingertips. Web of Science also offers a unique search method that helps researchers to easily navigate forward and backward between most recent research works and older research articles that are cited in recent research. It is also an indispensable scientometrics tool that facilitates sophisticated and in-depth analyses of research outputs of individuals and organisations alike.”

Said Professor N. Prabhu Dev, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University, “Web of Science is most useful to our university because our users from multiple disciplines can benefit from having easy access to essential, quality information. Web of Science backfiles also enable them to access the most significant research that can be incredibly useful in their research and innovation.”

“Thomson Reuters is pleased to support the higher education, research, and assessment needs of India’s academic community, as we are committed to supporting academics and researchers in the communities we serve. Web of Science will help professionals in India’s universities and institutions to conduct deeper research and development and broader analysis as they support the rapidly growing science and technology sectors,” said Mr. Vinay Singh, National Manager of India at Thomson Reuters.
“India’s research output has increased substantially since 1998, from roughly16,500 papers in 2000 to almost 30,000 in 2007 according to Thomson Reuters data,” said Mr. Wong Woei Fuh, Managing Director of Rest of Asia Pacific at Thomson Reuters. “India has also seen an increased investment in education made by the government towards raising the standards of scientific research and science education. We are very pleased that Web of Science continues to be the choice for universities in enabling critical discovery and research as seen by this robust endorsement from 50 universities in India. The consortium’s selection of Web of Science will help to drive India’s pursuit of the advancement of knowledge in science and technology.”
