THOMSON SCIENTIFIC EXPANDS COVERAGE OF NURSING JOURNALS

Nursing Journal Coverage to Double by End of 2006

Philadelphia, PA USA-London UK — September 7, 2006 — Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced that it has increased its coverage of nursing journals—nearly doubling the number of nursing journals indexed within the Web of Science® component of ISI Web of Knowledge™.

According to many in the industry, the nursing profession has evolved from being viewed as a technical vocation or trade to a recognized profession on par with law, medicine and teaching. In addition to being an invaluable part of the health profession, nursing today now involves clinical and basic research to establish a scientific basis for the care of individuals across the life span. As a result, there are many influential nursing research journals published worldwide.

"Thomson Scientific monitored this progression and made the decision to develop a whole category of nursing journals in the Science Citation Index Expanded® of Web of Science," said Jim Testa, director of Editorial Development at Thomson Scientific. "The next goal was to expand the comprehensiveness of this initial coverage. We were pleased when the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section (NAHRS) of the Medical Library Association contacted us expressing their concerns over the representation of nursing journals in the database. They were definitely instrumental in guiding our selection of the journals added," concluded Testa.

"Being indexed by ISI Web of Knowledge is an important indication of a journal's impact and influence on its respective field. We strongly believed that the nursing profession and other disciplines would benefit from Thomson Scientific increasing its coverage of nursing journals. Therefore, we were delighted that Thomson Scientific was receptive to meeting with us, and accepting our input into the selection process," remarked Melody Allison, NAHRS Chair on behalf of NAHRS and their Task Force to Map the Literature of Nursing [Margaret (Peg) Allen, Chair; and Susan K. Jacobs, as representative to the meeting for NAHRS, the Task Force, and the Interagency Council On Information Resources in Nursing (ICIRN)].

"We note that many of the journals identified as high impact in our bibliometric research were chosen for inclusion in the list of nursing journals added to ISI Web of Knowledge," added Allison.
