Science Watch has published its annual look back at the hottest of recent research.

Science Watch recently published its annual review of hot research, using citation information from Web of Knowledge and the Thomson Reuters Hot Papers database. The analysis highlights the researchers who, according to citations recorded during 2009, posted the highest numbers of Hot Papers published over the preceding two years. The report also lists the papers published in 2009 that were most cited by year's end.

Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute of MIT, USA, tops the list of scientists with multiple hot papers with 14 Hot Papers on the investigation of reprogrammed cells in models of Parkinson's disease, sickle-cell anemia, and other conditions.

The hottest research paper of 2009 was published in February by E. Komatsu, et al: "Five-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations: Cosmological interpretation"—this had 659 citations by the year's end.

The full report includes details of other hot research, profiles of top-performing authors and more.
