Preserving the integrity of the Journal Impact Factor

April 2009

Guidelines for preserving the integrity of the Journal Impact Factor have been published in our Citation Impact Center.

The Journal Impact Factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period, and is the most ubiquitous, simple and well-accepted indicator of journal quality. Journal Impact Factors are published annually by Thomson Reuters via Journal Citation Reports (JCR), which provides a number of metrics and quantitative tools for ranking, evaluating, and categorizing and comparing journals.

In a Citation Impact Center posting, Thomson Reuters comments on the influence of the impact factor, the importance of context, and on what the research community can do to preserve its integrity.
