New products contribute just 16 per cent of pharma revenues
Thomson Scientific
November 2007
Unique research findings from The Centre for Medicines Research (CMR) International Ltd, a Thomson business, suggest that the revenue derived from new products (those launched within the last five years) accounted for just 16 per cent of total revenue in 2006, continuing the industry's potential exposure to patent expiry.
CMR International is the world's most authoritative source of pharmaceutical R&D performance management metrics and trend data. It works with all major pharmaceutical companies worldwide to gain unique insights through analysis of confidential, primary-source data. This exclusive research informs much of the world's publicly quoted pharmaceutical R&D statistics.
CMR's research also revealed that:
- sales and clinical trial enrolments are both climbing, particularly in emerging markets
- although the cost of research and development continues to rise, there is no sign of a sustained upturn in the number of new products reaching the market. It is too early to say if the slight increase in NME (New Molecular Entity) and NAS (New Active Substance) launches in 2005/6 is the start of a trend or a one-off event.
This is just an example of the research trends illustrated in the CMR International Pharmaceutical 2007 R&D Factbook. The Factbook condenses the latest insights from CMR's uniquely comprehensive and robust industry-wide databases, with commentary that is available from no other provider. Each finding is presented in a clear, easily-understood chart, accompanied by a succinct commentary highlighting the key message together with an explanation of the methodology used and the definitions applied.
The Factbook is an indispensable reference and business planning tool used by decision makers in R&D, corporate finance, business strategy, marketing planning and corporate communications.
