Vaccinating the World
It was over 100 years ago when it was first observed in an Italian city that cervical cancer was pretty common amongst married women but rare among nuns. The specific discovery that the cancer is due to human papillomavirus was made in the early 1980s and within 30 years we are already offering vaccinations for adolescent girls. One may say that it's highly unusual that that a public health advance at that scale has been achieved within an individual career with such precision. It is rather unusual, and having continuously contributed to it is in itself our major reward.
